Why the Velovan?
The Velovan concept originated when Chris Clark, MD of John Clark Motor Group, and Phil Smart, Head of Business at Clark Commercials, both mountain biking enthusiasts, saw the need for a camper designed around the needs of mountain bikers visiting Scotland. They recognised that typical bike transport—using roof racks or tow ball-mounted carriers—exposes bikes to road dust, grime, and the elements, leading to wear and tear on sensitive components. With modern mountain bikes being both sophisticated and costly, storing them safely within the van was a priority.
Key Features of the Velovan
Based on a Volkswagen Transporter T32 Kombi, the Velovan combines flexibility and function, comfortably carrying up to five bikes and riders with a modular, customizable interior.
- Bike-Friendly Interior: Bikes are secured via fork-mounted brackets inside, keeping them safe during transit. Removable front wheels and optional rear axle stands add flexibility.
- Comfort and Convenience: Seating for up to three passengers can be swapped for a kitchen unit with a hob and cool box, or an outdoor kitchen setup. There’s ample storage, including a slide-out cupboard and sliding bike tray.
- Scottish Craftsmanship: Designed by Scottish company The Ply Guys, the interior features a contour-lined roof and relocatable LED lights. Harris Tweed seating doubles as a mattress for a cosy sleep space.
- Outdoor-Ready: A Tentbox on the roof transforms into an instant sleeping area, with a ladder and an awning for all-weather bike maintenance. An onboard power supply supports e-bike charging.
- Complimentary Tools and Local Expertise: Each van includes essential bike tools, plus Clarkia's offers local guide connections, route suggestions, and information on biker-friendly spots.

The Velovan seats and sleeps up to five people, though we suggest it’s ideally suited for a pair of riders planning a weekend getaway. The upcoming Velovan fleet will cater to various types of adventurers, offering options from basic bike transporters to more spacious, luxury campers like the Grand California.
As Phil Smart puts it, “The Velovan is quite unique in the camper rental space. No one really caters for the full needs of riders visiting the Highlands for an adventure.” The initial Velovan prototype was showcased at the Thrive Festival in Ballater, where it garnered enthusiastic feedback.
Launching Soon
